subgen is a local subtitle generator for Windows: it creates subtitles for your videos and can translate them into Chinese.

1. Data collection

subgen does not collect any personal information and does not upload your videos, audio or subtitles. Speech recognition (whisper.cpp) and translation (llama.cpp) both run on your computer. For translation, the app starts a local translation server that listens only on 127.0.0.1, so the content never leaves your machine.

The app creates these files on your computer:

  • Subtitles: .srt / .zh.srt next to the video, with the same name. If you use “生成复核报告” (generate review report), also a .zh.review.txt.
  • Settings (config.toml in the app folder): model location, translation options, the last folder you opened, and similar settings.
  • Temporary files (tmp/ in the app folder): extracted audio and intermediate subtitles, used to resume after an interruption. Removed automatically after 7 days.
  • Logs (logs/ in the app folder): processing records for troubleshooting. Removed automatically after 7 days.
  • Components and models: the recognition engine, FFmpeg and the translation engine live in the app folder; models live in the “model location” you choose.

2. Network access

subgen goes online only to download components and models (on first run, or when you click “Download” in the “组件与存放位置” (components & storage) window; the app UI is in Chinese):

  • GitHub (github.com): the whisper.cpp recognition engine, FFmpeg, and the llama.cpp translation engine.
  • Hugging Face (huggingface.co): the speech and translation models.
  • If the official source can’t be reached, it falls back to mirrors: gh-proxy.com (GitHub) and hf-mirror.com (Hugging Face).

Every downloaded file must pass a SHA256 check before it is used. Generating and translating subtitles does not need the internet.

The app also looks for models you have already downloaded on this computer (the Hugging Face cache that HF_HOME and similar variables point to). It only reads and verifies them; nothing is uploaded.

3. Third-party services

subgen has no analytics, tracking or cloud storage, and does not check for updates.

4. Uninstall

Deleting the app folder removes the program, settings, logs and temporary files. If you moved the “model location” to another folder, delete that folder separately. Subtitles you generated sit next to your videos; keep or delete them as you like.
